How to apply eyeliner — a beginner’s guide to a clean wing.

A winged eyeliner looks complicated, but it is really three short strokes joined into one. The mistake most beginners make is trying to draw the whole wing in a single sweep with an unsteady hand. Break it into pieces and it gets easy — here is the method our team uses, built for Indian eyes and Indian weather.

01 · pick the right tool

For a crisp line, a liquid liner with a fine felt tip gives you the most control — far more than a brush-and-pot for a first attempt. Rest your elbow on a firm surface so your hand is steady, and keep a cotton bud dipped in a little micellar water nearby to clean up edges.

02 · map the angle first

Before you draw anything, place the tip at the outer corner of your eye and tilt it toward the end of your lower lash line — roughly pointing at your temple. That angle is the spine of your wing. Make a tiny dot where you want the wing to end so both eyes match.

03 · draw the wing, then connect

Draw a short line from the dot back toward the middle of your eyelid — this is the upper edge of the wing. Then draw a second line from your lash line up to meet the tip of the first. You now have a small triangle; fill it in. Finally, run the liner along your upper lash line into the wing in one smooth motion.

"Stop trying to draw the wing in one stroke. Three short lines that meet up beat one shaky sweep every time."

04 · for hooded or monolid eyes

If your lid hides the line when your eye is open, look straight into the mirror and mark where the crease folds — extend the wing slightly past that point so it stays visible. Keep the liner thin along the lash line and let it thicken only toward the outer third.

05 · make it last

Set the look by gently pressing a matching dark eyeshadow over the liner with a small brush — this stops transfer onto the upper lid in humidity. For the waterline, finish with a smudge-proof kajal so the eye reads defined from every angle.

That is the entire wing — angle, triangle, connect, set. Slow the first few times, automatic after a week. Want to see a shade on your own eyes first? Preview it with the free virtual try-on, or browse the full eyeliner range.

Frequently asked.

How do I apply winged eyeliner for beginners?

Break the wing into three short strokes instead of one sweep. First mark the wing’s end by pointing the liner from your outer corner toward your temple. Draw a line from that dot back to the middle of the lid, then a second line from the lash line up to meet it, and fill the small triangle. Finally connect it along the upper lash line. Rest your elbow on a surface for a steady hand.

Which eyeliner is best for hooded or monolid eyes?

A waterproof liquid liner with a fine tip works best because you can place a thin, precise line that stays put when the lid folds. Mark where your crease hides the line with your eye open, and extend the wing slightly past that point so it stays visible.

How do I stop my eyeliner from smudging in humidity?

Use a waterproof formula, keep the line thin near the lash base, and press a matching dark eyeshadow over the liner to set it. On the waterline, switch to a smudge-proof kajal rather than a creamy pencil. Metabu’s Luxe Eye liquid liner is waterproof and built for Indian heat.

Liquid liner or pencil — which is easier to learn?

A felt-tip liquid liner is usually easier for a clean wing because the tip gives more control than a soft pencil, which can drag and smudge. Pencils are better for a smoky, blended lash line; liquid is better for sharp, defined lines and wings.

Is Metabu eyeliner waterproof and cruelty-free?

Yes. The Metabu Luxe Eye liquid liner is waterproof, long-wearing and cruelty-free, with an ultra-fine tip for sharp wings. Free shipping across India and cash on delivery are available.
