Concealer vs Foundation: what’s the difference?
They look similar in the bottle and do completely different jobs. Here is exactly when to reach for each — and why most routines use both.
The short answer
Foundation evens out your whole face in a thin, buildable layer; concealer is thicker and spot-covers what foundation can’t — dark circles, blemishes and pigmentation. They are partners, not substitutes: apply foundation all over first, then concealer only where you still need extra coverage.
Foundation vs Concealer, side by side
| Foundation | Concealer | |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage area | The entire face | Small, targeted spots |
| Coverage level | Sheer to medium, buildable | High, opaque |
| Where to use | Cheeks, forehead, nose, jaw | Under-eyes, blemishes, pigmentation |
| Texture | Thinner, spreadable | Thicker, denser |
| Order in routine | First, over primer | After foundation |
| Can it replace the other? | Not for dark circles | Not for overall evenness |
Reach for foundation when
- You want your whole face to look even and uniform
- Your skin tone varies across the face (common on Indian skin)
- You want a finished base for blush and highlighter to sit on
Reach for concealer when
- You only need to hide dark circles or a few blemishes
- You want a quick, no-foundation "clean" look
- Foundation alone isn’t covering pigmentation fully
Or use both — Most routines use both: a thin layer of foundation everywhere, then concealer only under the eyes and on any spot that needs it. Set with a little powder so nothing creases.

Common questions
Do I need both concealer and foundation?
Not always. If your skin is fairly even you can wear foundation alone, or use concealer alone for a quick "clean skin" look. But for full coverage — an even face plus hidden dark circles and blemishes — the two do different jobs and work best together: foundation all over, concealer only where you need extra.
What goes first, concealer or foundation?
Foundation first, then concealer. Applying foundation first evens the whole face, so you often need far less concealer afterwards — and only on the spots foundation didn’t fully cover. Concealing first usually means you wipe most of it away when you blend foundation on top.
Can concealer be used as foundation?
Only on small areas. Concealer is thicker and higher-coverage, so spreading it over the whole face looks cakey and creases fast. For all-over wear use a foundation; keep concealer for under-eyes and spots.
Which concealer and foundation suit Indian skin?
Choose both by undertone, not just depth — Indian skin is usually warm or neutral, so warm-based shades look natural while cool/pink ones can look ashy. Metabu’s HD foundation and full-coverage concealer are shade-developed on Indian complexions. Cruelty-free and dermatologist-tested.
