How to apply mascara without clumps or smudges.
Curl, wiggle, pull through — the three moves that separate every lash. Plus how to keep it from smudging in Indian heat.

Clumpy, spidery lashes almost always come from technique, not the mascara. Too much product, no wiggle at the root, and a second coat applied too late are the usual culprits. Here is how we get separated, lengthened lashes that hold through an Indian day.
01 · curl before you coat
Always curl bare lashes first — never after mascara, which sticks the lashes to the curler and pulls them out. Squeeze an eyelash curler at the root for a few seconds, then walk it out toward the tips in one or two more squeezes for a rounded, natural lift.
02 · wiggle at the root
Look down into a mirror, place the brush at the very base of the upper lashes, and wiggle it side to side as you slowly pull up. The wiggle deposits pigment where lashes look fullest — the root — and the side-to-side motion is what separates them instead of gluing them together.
03 · pull through to the tips
After the wiggle, sweep the brush straight up through to the ends. Wipe any excess off the wand on the bottle mouth before it touches your lashes — a loaded wand is the number-one cause of clumps. One well-wiped coat beats three heavy ones.
"Wipe the wand before every eye. Most clumps are just too much mascara on the brush."
04 · second coat while the first is wet
If you want more volume, apply the second coat while the first is still slightly wet. Mascara clumps when a wet coat hits a dry, set one. If a clump does form, comb it out immediately with a clean spoolie before it dries.
05 · lower lashes and staying power
Hold the wand vertically and use just the tip to touch the lower lashes lightly — heavy lower-lash mascara is what creates under-eye smudges. To fight smudging in humidity, keep the lower lashes light, set any under-eye concealer with powder, and avoid touching your eyes through the day.

Frequently asked.
How do I apply mascara without clumps?
Wipe the excess off the wand before it touches your lashes, wiggle the brush at the root, then pull straight through to the tips. Apply a second coat only while the first is still wet, and comb out any clump immediately with a clean spoolie. Most clumps are simply too much product on the brush.
Do you curl lashes before or after mascara?
Before, always. Curling after mascara sticks the lashes to the curler and can pull them out. Curl bare lashes first — squeeze at the root, then walk the curler out toward the tips — then apply mascara.
How many coats of mascara should I use?
One well-applied, wand-wiped coat is enough for a natural look. For more volume, add a second coat while the first is still slightly wet — applying it once the first coat has dried is what causes clumping and flaking.
How do I stop mascara smudging under my eyes?
Keep lower-lash mascara very light (use just the tip of the wand), set any under-eye concealer with powder, and avoid rubbing your eyes. Heavy lower lashes and un-set under-eye product are the main causes of smudging in Indian heat.
